I could not put this down. I literally spent all day on 12/30 just reading this. 400+ pages in one day, because I couldn't bear to part with it (thank you, Xmas/NYE vacation for giving me the slack to do it!).
This is hard to describe, and I want to avoid spoilers. I can say that it starts in a Dickensian setting, has a Gothic, crumbling mansion, a Victorian madhouse, a love story, and plenty of twists & turns. Even when I kind of knew where it was going, it was thrilling to see things play out! ...more

This book had two major strengths for me. Firstly it felt very genuine in its time and locations, I really felt like I'd been transported to Victorian London. The characters were also very believable and relatable, in their own ways.
Secondly, the clever and twisty plot was fantastic in that each of the new acts of the story made you almost completely re-evaluate everything you felt and thought about the previous act.

I finally gave up on this book after trying to get through it for six weeks and only getting through 200 pages. The book has it's moments, and I will absolutely admit to getting interested at the plot twist at the end of part one. Unfortunately it reverted to the slow, plodding pace, and I started skimming again.
