the concept was intriguing (Greek mythology meets Beauty and the Beast), and the execution was mostly engaging. The tone reminded me somewhat of Til We All Have Faces, so I wasn't surprised to read in the author's bio that the book had been a formative influence on her. There were definitely parts of this book that were difficult to read for me--so sad and dark or else just writing that distracted me. For one thing, I noticed that the author used many of the same words and phrases repeatedly--it ...more

I was not expecting to fall completely head over heels for Rosamund Hodge's retelling of Beauty and the Beast. Cruel Beauty was almost... almost perfection. This is a creative version of Beauty and the Beast. I love the story of Beauty and the Beast and like reading all of the retellings. This one is dark, but I loved the way the writer took me on a crazy journey and I kept up with her-fun read.

Such a wonderfully dark interpretation of beauty and the beast. Demons, Gods, gardens in sky, magic mirrors, and every character is more complex than you first suspect. Rosamund Hodge, publish more books please!
