This book is remarkable. This is actually the third time I've read it. I love Virginia Woolf and have read her journals, her letters, biographies written by her nephew and others. I went with a friend to visit her home at Rodmell, her sister's home at Charleston, the home where both lived in Bloomsbury. I am a huge fan. I tried to read this a couple of times and couldn't get into it. Finally, with all the hype generated by Michael Cunningham's The Hours, I decided to give it another try.
As Carissa Dalloway prepares for a party she is giving that evening, we are swept along in her thoughts. Woolf explores relationships, choices, regrets, and the way in which Clarissa's needs and desires take a backseat to social convention.
