This is a revisionist, lady-fied version of Sherlock Holmes. Holmes has retired to the countryside where he can do his experiments and keep his bee hives. Mary Russell is a maligned sort of heiress-orphan - you know, the sort of heiress-orphan with a cranky, mean aunt who manages her household with an iron fist, a trust fund Mary can't touch for a long time and recurring nightmares about the death of her family. I will start by saying that I can understand why so many people like this book, I'm just not one of them. While mystery isn't my "go-to" genre, I have nothing against a good mystery. Again, this book just wasn't one of the good ones (in my opinion).

The writing wasn't the problem for me, nor was the reinterpretation of the classic Sherlock Holmes story (maybe that's the wrong word as this wasn't a redo of the familiar story, just a take on what happened after the stories ended). I should also say

Although I'm not normally a Sherlock Holmes reader, or even a mystery reader, I did truly savor this first book in the series. Mary, the teenaged main character, is funny, clever, and flexible, which keeps old retired Holmes on his toes. I love the give and take of the characters together, since the characters are what makes a book for me, but the action and sleuthing kept me reading as well. King's writing and description were well-detailed without being too overwhelming or slowing down the plo ...more
