I read this book as part of Read Harder Challenge 2017 for Task 24: Read a book wherein all point-of-view characters are people of color.

This book is about lives of two different generation of four family, mothers that were born in China but had to immigrate due to difficult situations and their daughters who born in USA.

Chinese parents are strict and unforgiving and daughters are more or less desperate in some period of their lives to run away from this extreme authority.

Meh. Maybe I'm just not an Amy Tan fan. Family sagas are never my favorite genre, but I like to keep trying everything.

I listened to the audiobook, read by the author, and I didn't realize until I downloaded it that it was abridged. But if it was read by the author, then I guess it was an authoritative abridgment? Maybe this would have been more powerful if I'd read the entire text, don't know.

This reminded me a lot of The Bonesetter's Daughter. It was pretty much the same story, with different ...more
