My senior year of college, my English professor for our senior seminar allowed us to pick two of the books we would read. We brought in choices, and then we voted. This book was the suggestion made passionately by one of my classmates. The book wasn't chosen, but as it was one everyone else seemed to know, I bought it. It then sat on my bookshelf for 27 years. The characters are certainly well drawn here, they are unique and interesting. The setting also has some appeal with its rich New Orleans backdrop, but the plot is a plodding and similar and there is a lot of humor that is just not my style.

It was hard to like this book. Unfortunately the main character was fairly despicable.
But the author has a lovely turn of phrase and particularly memorable descriptions are those associated with Miss Trixie!
