this book is gorgeously written and I know it's neither the book nor the author's fault I'm having this reaction but, you know, fuck this book. how do you rate something so lovely and emotionally evocative when you loathed one of the core conceits so, so much, you cannot think about anything else? I guess you just don't rate it.

I was torn on this book. I liked the relationships and the arc of the story, but thought sometimes it suffered from too much flowery language. And I think I might be reaching my limit for lovable eccentrics in YA lit. Does everyone need to wear feathered hats and do some amazing, unique art while also being surfing prodigies? Where are the regular people? This book is still worth a read, the family relationships are very well done.

I don't give 5 stars very often but this book was a pleasure to read. Amazing story of teenage angst mixed with tragedy and art.
