This was the book club book for September, and if I hadn't been hosting this month, I can't say I would have trudged through all 100 (short) chapters. I know, I know -- this is one of those amazing books that I'm supposed to love. I'm good at breaking the mold, though.

I had very low expectations for this novel, probably because when I asked anyone who recommended it to me what it was about, they would say, "well, it's about the boy and a tiger in a lifeboat, and well, it's sort of hard to explain. but it's good - really." Now I have to say, to my chagrin after owning the book and not picking it up for more than a year, they were about spot on with the description. I "liked" this book. I didn't LOVE it. The amount of detail on how he survived was amazing. Knowing that he was going to end up a castaway made the first section of the book drag. Maybe if it had started on the boat and been told in flashbacks that might have changed my opinion. Overall a good book that was well written.

I thought this was a throughly thought provoking book. I love the depth of the metaphors prevented and the alpha/omega struggle. It's not often a fictional story can make me wish I could meet the character so I can ask my own questions. I gave it only 4 stars because it took me a bit to get into the story, but once I got there I had no problem staying on track.
