Simply put, I was bored and it took everything I had to get as far as I did. It never got better for me.

I had heard about this book for a long time, but had never been drawn to reading it until my book club chose it.
I loved the way this book begins, with the author's note about how the book came about in the first place. Being told that the story he would hear from Pi Patel was one that would "make him believe in God." With an opening like that, how could you not want to read more?

This was the book club book for September, and if I hadn't been hosting this month, I can't say I would have trudged through all 100 (short) chapters. I know, I know -- this is one of those amazing books that I'm supposed to love. I'm good at breaking the mold, though.
It took me a long time to get into this book. Maybe that's because each chapter for the first hundred pages was a little vignette about an entirely new topic. Or maybe it was the pretentious way the author explains how wonderful th ...more

The way this book was written, I almost felt it was a non-fiction account of a survivor's tale of crossing the Pacific alone in a boat with just a tiger as company, but not getting eaten by said tiger. It started off a little slow, as I wasn't really interested in Pi's religious pursuits and how he balanced practicing Christianity, Hinduism, and Islam in his Indian home town. This was the 3rd book I've read recently (Eat Pray Love and Cutting for Stone) that focused on Indian culture, and none c

Sometimes I like to read a novel that is high in suspense yet you know that it is ok to become attached to the character because you know right from the beginning he or she lives to tell their tale because the story is being told in retrospect. While reading I became entralled with Pi's survival instincts and will to live. The only part that gave me pause was some of the gory details of what Pi ate, the descriptions of the tiger finding and eating it's prey. Etc.

I had very low expectations for this novel, probably because when I asked anyone who recommended it to me what it was about, they would say, "well, it's about the boy and a tiger in a lifeboat, and well, it's sort of hard to explain. but it's good - really." Now I have to say, to my chagrin after owning the book and not picking it up for more than a year, they were about spot on with the description. I think my favorite parts, besides the quick pace of the adventure once the ocean becomes a majo

I "liked" this book. I didn't LOVE it. The amount of detail on how he survived was amazing. Knowing that he was going to end up a castaway made the first section of the book drag. Maybe if it had started on the boat and been told in flashbacks that might have changed my opinion. Overall a good book that was well written.

I thought this was a throughly thought provoking book. I love the depth of the metaphors prevented and the alpha/omega struggle. It's not often a fictional story can make me wish I could meet the character so I can ask my own questions. I gave it only 4 stars because it took me a bit to get into the story, but once I got there I had no problem staying on track.
