I absolutely loved this book. I had downloaded a sample on my Kindle, and I liked it so much that I waited until I could get the book from a bookstore so that I could experience it fully. It follows the lives of some people in a small town in Colorado. It begins quietly, and continues with little ornamentation -- the title seems apt. It is subtle all the way through, but as in musical plainsong, the parts join together, making a greater whole. There is spare punctuation and no quotation marks, a

This novel paints a beautiful picture of Colorado. The kindness and compassion shown by the characters is heart-warming. Couldn't we all use a little more of this? There is a real sense of place. I felt like I really knew the town of Holt and the people who lived there. I cared about the characters, was truly invested in their development - and wished them no harm.

This novel is slow-paced, spare, slightly melancholy, quiet and very beautiful. It takes place in a small town and winds together the stories of several inhabitants - a couple of school teachers, two old bachelors, a pregnant high school girl, two grade-school boys. For me, the book was about leaning on one another - the many different, small ways that people help each other find their way through life's daily trials and joy.

A gem of a book. The stories of four brothers, two young, Ike and Bobby; and two old, Harold and Raymond; Guthrie, Ike and Bobby's father, and Victoria Robideaux, a pregnant teenager are told in interwoven chapters. The cumulative effect is quietly gorgeous. I will definitely read more of Haruf's work.

Beautiful writing, but the story was told in a detached style that I had trouble connecting with. Thanks to Anne of Green Gables I have a fondness for stories in which unwanted, rejected young girls find homes with and brighten the lives of lonely old men, so Victoria's plotline was my favorite, though she's no Anne.

I almost gave up on this book within the first few chapters, but I'm glad I persisted. The writing is beautiful.
