What Members Thought

A cozy, comforting read--the language is soft and passive, and while the novel deals with ugly situations--divorce, unwanted pregnancy, workplace pressures--it does so through an optimistic lens. The overall vibe is that everything will work out, maybe not today, but soon. The small-town Colorado setting and the simple, direct prose (not to mention the presence of a pair of old bachelor farmers) reminded me in some ways of listening to A Prairie Home Companion. A series of small town characters...including a pregnant high school girl, two old bachelors, a teacher and his two young boys...that the author brings together as one at the end of the novel. Haruf does a great job of capturing the feeling of people in a Midwest town. Wonderful atmosphere but not long on plot. Effective coming-of-age scenes despite the smut.
