About half-way through this book I had an abrupt change of opinion. When I began the book I was captivated by the language, the ideas, the ways my imagination was being sparked (and no, I'm not talking about the raunchy scenes - even though there were oh so many of them. ugh) and the gradual unfolding of the lives of the two couples involved in the story.

[Review from 2004.] For a long time I loved the title of this so much I didn't want to read it, lest it not live up. I liked it, though; the format of narrative interspersed with contemplations of etymology or philosophy or history totally worked for my geeky self. Plus it was dirty. ;P

i remember being astounded by the beginning of this book. i don't really remember the end. however, i know it made me love kundera, so. and i still think the title is one of the best things ever written. genius title. i think i like the title more than the actual book.
