On the back of the library's copy of this book is a review from The Horn Book Magazine that says "the whole book is seamless, compelling, and memorable -- impossible to put down; difficult to forget." Well, I was about to put that bold statement to the test: "difficult to forget," huh? What if you read this twenty years ago and have had two kids and subsequent serious sleep deprivation since then??

This was a family read aloud that we all enjoyed, in the sense that it was a great story of resistance and neighbors helping neighbors when Nazi Germany occupied Denmark. There are a couple of deaths mentioned that were so cruel they upset me, but my kids were okay. The afterword is just as important as the story.

I had been wanting to read this for awhile as I enjoy Lois Lowry books. This is a high school/middle school audience WWII story so it is a fast and not graphic read. It is historical fiction so not based on one particular story, but we all know there are many stories like this one that had to have happened during the war. I read this after Irenas Children book so it complemented that book as well as it was more from a child's viewpoint. Very well written. I enjoyed learning about the Danish peop

I read this when I was a kid, but I recently listened to it via audiobook. It's a great story - you can step into Annemarie's shoes and see how WWII affects her - this 10 year old girl - and her family and friends. I loved the parts regarding the Resistance, how Danes did their part against the Nazis, and the "fake" funeral. I'd forgotten about the little packet that Annemarie's mother gives her to give to her uncle... I guessed that it was fake ID papers for the Jews on the run, but...it's not

As a general rule I enjoy Young Adult books. I think this one was just a little too far down the age scale for me. It was, however a really good story about Jews in Denmark during WWII and how the people of Denmark did their best to help them escape the Nazis. I would definitely recommend it for children old enough to start learning about the Holocaust who might not yet be ready to hear the harsher truths. This introduces the subject without delving too deeply into the horrors the Jews faced. It

Great book!

Although a very simple book in vocabulary and sentence structure, it's a good introduction to the Holocaust for the middle school student. There is some conflict and suspense with the Nazi soldiers, but no violence. All the same, I found myself choking back tears in some parts. Annemarie is a wonderful character, and I am glad to have "met" her. My edition ends with a note from the author about what parts of her story are fiction and not fiction, which is a real bonus in my eyes.
