This is the third of the Giver series. It is a very different book from the first two. There are more fantastic/magical elements here, and it's kind of depressing. OK, like, actually depressing. Messenger brings up the issues of dis/ability and inequality again. And, this is an interesting portrait of dystopia/utopia. This book serves as a link to bring together the characters of the first 2 books in this series, 'The Giver' and 'Gathering Blue', primarily advancing the storyline of the latter. I read this immediately after finishing "Gathering Blue" and I read it on the train and might have whispered "JONAS" out loud at one point. This was good in that it ties together the first and the second book together very nicely. I am assuming that when she wrote this she knew there was going to be a fourth book? Because there was some serious lack of resolution for the trade-mart sub-plot otherwise. ...more
