sheer, fucking genius.

elegantly written, but not too caught up in the prose, the brilliance of the lighthouse metaphor, the casting of light, the way mrs. ramsay is always there (reminiscent of A Passage to India and whatshername), and at the end, that last brush-stroke.

(it helps i wrote a fantastic essay on this. but still. passages made me shiver, make me want to be a writer and then get filled with despair that i'll never compare. (ooh, rhyme!)). ...more

This book has been on my bucket list of books to read for years. Last year I attempted to read it, but ended up putting it down after a mere 20 pages in, admitting defeat. Then, when I looked at the syllabus for my British Literature course this last semester I noted with both glee and dismay that, at the end of the semester, we'd all be reading it together.
