WOW! I can't believe I've never read this story. I loved Kindred...and this is an entirely different kind of wonderfulness. Oh, my, I loved it. The connections between a human woman and her non-human captors or saviors, depending on how you view it, form the plot of this novel. I read several reviews that felt the strangeness of the "creatures" was just too weird for them. Having read Kindred and Bloodchild and Other Stories, I can see that Butler has some favorite themes - slavery, captivity, collaboration, survival, identity, rape, sex, procreation, civilization. She plays with these concepts as usual, leaving the reader little refuge in black and white morality.
I only wish the characters in this story felt a little more three-dimensional. The captors have an inscrutability that's quite logical within the story, but even they felt more fleshed-out than many of ...more
