I LOVED this book. One of the reviews says it would be the love child of Gabriel Garcia Marquez (who I love) and Willa Cather (who I love). Magical realism based on a Russian fairy tale meets homesteading on the Alaskan frontier. All of the characters are great. This is just a perfect, winter, ignore-your-chores read that totally swept me up. The author's notes are awesome as well. ...more

This book was selected as a monthly group read for the 2017 PopSugar Ultimate Reading Challenge. While I didn't get my hands on a copy in time to participate in the discussion, I'm so glad that I read it after the fact. The story is based on a Russian folk tale/fairy tale in which a child made from snow comes to life it response to a childless couple's wish for a child. 4.5 stars!!!! I loved this story! A fun winter fairytale and a magical story! Such beautiful imagery, great characters, touching relationships! I am longing to go to Alaska although I know I do not want to live like this couple - the beauty of the land and the despair of their lives is so poetic in this story and makes me yearn to visit even more! Overall an enjoyable read and awe inspiring in so many ways. I still cannot decide if I like the ending or not but I think it fit perfectly with the s ...more

4.5 stars LOVED IT! I put off reading this book when it first came out. The story intrigued me but sounded boring and a little too dark. However I ended up falling in love with this book and the characters. The beautiful and dangerous Alaska setting, the early 1900’s, the richly drawn characters and the creative plot line all made me want to stay up late and finish this book!

Well imagined retelling of a little known fairy tale. Characters are broad stroked yet endearing and the setting she conjures up is perfect. Enjoyed it a lot.
