What Members Thought
Geraldine Coutts, an Ojibwe woman, lives on a reservation in North Dakota with her husband and teenaged son, Joe. Joe narrates the tale of the day his mother is brutally attacked and its aftermath. Geraldine knows the identity of the man who raped her, but is too afraid to tell either the white or tribal police who did it. Joe teams up with his friends to investigate the crime and to try to bring his mother's attacker to justice.

This was an excellent book -- the first of Erdrich's that I've been able to finish. She draws the line so well between 13 year old Joe's old life before his mother his brutally raped and his new life after that event.

#booklyreadathon My rating had a lot to do with the fact that it took me awhile to get through it and that I felt that the chapters were a bit too long; wished that they had been chopped up into smaller chunks, as I lost a lot of the storyline in those long chapters. The writing was beautiful and it was an excellent story; just was unable to follow it well
Powerful Storytelling
As usual, Are rich weaves a powerful and deep story. There's just so much happening, it's incredible how many layers there are to these stories. They also come with a particular heaviness. ...more
