I have several friends who love the Night Vale podcast, but I am catching up with another podcast, so I thought I'd read this book instead. I gather, from conversations with these friends, that it is similar to the podcast in atmosphere and environment - the assumptions Night Vale citizens make, the dangerous library, the Secret Police, the angels that aren't angels, and the disbelief in mountains. A novel set in the world of Night Vale is a great idea, and I did have a lot of fun reading it. It was a little too long, and some of the weirdness of the podcast didn't work as well for me in such a long novel. That weirdness for the sake of being weird got tiresome when there was just so much of it, even though I love that in the podcast. It did help that I liked the two central characters, and I was happy to finally learn just what the deal is with the man in the tan jacket. ...more

The audiobook gives a very good WTNV experience, narrated by The Voice of Night Vale Joseph Fink (and a few guest stars!) though it being fiction, I tended to drift in and out of attention. The bones of the story were captivating, however, and I think I’ll read it and give it my full attention.
