When this book starts, Rose is a nine year old girl. She has a mother who is alternately distracted and devoted, a father who's going through the motions, and an older brother, Joseph, who would be hard pressed to care less about Rose. At dinner one night, Rose discovers she can taste something strange in the food her mother has made. She can taste the feelings of the person who made the food - not just her mother, but anyone who makes food that Rose eats. Her mother's horrifying emptiness and e

Obscure, sad, beautifully written; I loved this book. The story of Rose who is cursed with the ability to taste the emotions of whomever has prepared her food--every ingredient. Beginning with her mother, she has to taste her mother's dissatisfaction in her marriage and subsequent affair (and guilt) that follows. I think this was a good idea but the author got lost along the way. I loved the idea of being able to taste people's feelings but I'm not sure the author knew exactly what to do with this little gem and suddenly you have a story of a family but with very little coherence and actual plot. Okay I didn't really like this. I thought the premise was really intriguing but it fell flat in the execution. I still have no idea what really went on with her bother either. Disappointing.

I really am not a fan of magical realism. I just don't get it, I guess.

Just ok. Reminded me that I liked "Like Water for Chocolate" so much more.
