Are you the kind of person who liked reading Chaucer in school to get to figure out the Middle English? And/or puns in Shakespeare plays? Or James Joyce? Then this may be the dystopian future for you!

This sounded interesting, and I'm have inclined to give it a chance on the audio version, but Newman went so far in creating this post-apocalyptic world that she created a new language. Since the book is narrated in the first person it's not just the dialog, but the whole book that's written in a bastardized, juvenile form of English. While I have no doubt that you could eventually pick up the rhythm, the truth is a simply don't want to work that hard.

This was the ugliest "language" or dialect I can imagine, and was such a barrier to understanding the story. But I finished it, finally. I can't really recommend it, as the language is so off-putting, and the story itself (of what little I could understand) seems to wobble around, unsure of where to go. I didn't really care for any of the characters.
