This is such a fantastic book. So many elements of the world building are familiar and yet completely new. A world where the magical world is in the north, separated from the mundane world by a wall? Seen it - but not one where that mundane world is vaguely 1920s Britain, with nods to trench warfare and “modern” ‘20s tech. I bought this book on the recommendation of a staff member at a bookstore when I asked for books I would enjoy if I had enjoyed Harry Potter. I suppose it's like Harry Potter if all you think about is magic, school aged teens, and a dark tone. This was not like Harry Potter. it wasn't bad. it simply wasn't extremely enjoyable either. The story was very dark, with the heroine constantly dealing with death (it's her family's legacy, to keep the dead in death.), and fighting the fight mostly alone

Just re-read this over 10 years after I initially read it and it is still just as amazing. Even for our currently burgeoning YA genre, there simply aren't many that reach this truly stellar "Sabriel" standard.
