Note: This review is based on having read the book all the way through, but only being in week 1 of the process (just starting morning pages and artist dates).
As an atheist, it took me several chapters to get past being put off by all of the God references and magical thinking. After a while, I was able to think of them as a more general representation of spirituality, rather than religion per se.

I've heard so much about this book and how it's a must read for creative types but I honestly didn't see what the big deal was with the book. I can't wrap my brain around doing the morning pages (but, truth be told, I'm all about the artist date). I respect Julia Cameron and her devotees but this book didn't live up to the hype.

There were quite a few ideas I took away from Cameron's book. I didn't find all of the references to the 12 Step Program necessary but I took what worked for me and left the rest. I would also caution other readers that, although Cameron says you can substitute whatever you believe in for "God," there is a great deal of God talk throughout the book, especially the later chapters. Some readers might have a difficult time with this and for this reason might want to give this book a pass.

I am working through this book, again, as part of my newest foray into doing the The Artists Way, again. I'll be using this one, the Artist's Way Datebook, the Artist's Way Morning Pages, and the The Artist's Way Workbook. So don't be surprised if you see the whole set fly by here as I'm giving a cursory read an perusal over all of them before starting this up again in January.
