I don't know why I took so long to start reading this, but when I finally did, I couldn't put it down! At first, I wasn't sure what to expect, but once I got used to Jack's "voice," it flowed quickly and became really intense. My heart was racing during one part, that's how high the level of suspense was. There is such interesting psychological exploration throughout the story.
What seemed a bit strange for me was that Jack was able to read really well for a five year-old, yet he still talked li

I had seen this book everywhere but just picked it up on a whim passing by the paperback shelves at the library. I didn't actually know much about the story but when I started reading the idea of a boy and his mother being trapped in a single room was intriguing and original.

The 5-year-old's narration did annoy me a little, but it grew on me, as did the characters, as more was revealed about the 11 square feet around them and how they ended up there. This part of the story kept me reading, was i

I recently finished "Room" by Emma Donoghue, recommended by Heidi Patterson Justice for my #2014ReadingChallenge and on my Read Harder list (Read a book that was adapted into a movie, then watch the movie). A truly compelling read, the story is half about life in the shed where Ma and Jack are kept hostage and the other half about life afterwards. Donoghue provides so much detail of not only the pain of being kept prisoner but the disappointed joy and unexpected struggles of adjusting to "normal ...more

Fantastic book, the pace is swift, and the writing is top-notch. Though I don't think there will be a sequel, I would be interested in continuing the story of Jack and his discovery of Outside. I thought it would be a creepier read, but it's not at all creepy. It's defies classification to me. ...more

It took me a little while to get into the voice of the boy but once I did it was easier to read. There were more issues regarding the mother that I wanted to know more about but I had to realize that the boy would not be old enough to get into those issues.

This was such an interesting story. At first I was really thrown off by the five-year old narrator. It took me quite a few pages to get into the swing of it and to be able to read without awkwardness. I'm glad I was able to get past that hurdle because it's such an interesting look at a terrifying ordeal and from such a different perspective. Well worth it. ...more

Room deserves every bit of hype it has received. I was hesitant to read it because I thought the subject matter might be too disturbing (a woman is abducted, gives birth to a baby in captivity, he grows up only in the confines of a single room). I was also worried that the choice of a 5-year-old narrator would be gimmicky or annoying. (It takes a few pages to get used to his voice, but it's charming once you get the rhythms of his chatter). It turns out that in the hands of such a talented write ...more

Wow, what an engrossing story. Told from the perspective of a 5 year old who has only known one room his entire life. The full cast audiobook was fantastic and I definitely recommend listening to this fascinating story.
