NOTE: I read this way back in 2008 and I have a feeling I wouldn't like it so much now, if at all. Take my review with a grain of salt.
Admittedly deeper than my last read (Glass Houses by Rachel Caine), it's still in the same basic genre that I felt like reading at this time. Even though Zoey is a bit of a Mary-Sue character (practically perfect in every way), I still liked her, and it probably helped it was written in first person so that I could read her insecurities and such. I like the concept behind these books, but they are terribly written. However, I was at my in-laws for Christmas and we were all relaxing and just doing our own thing, so this book (and the rest of the series) were super fast reads that I didn't have to concentrate on. That's probably good since if I concentrated too hard the writing would drive me crazy. :) B for plot idea, D for execution.

A promising start to a YA vampyre series that doesn't involve too much teenage angst, though the protagonist is super specially marked and headed for big things! I liked that she stood up for herself and didn't need some male to save her, though there are hints of a romantic interest. Well, it wouldn't be a YA novel without some romance!

Awful! Seriously, yikes. I can't believe this is a young adult book and that the author advertises that her and her daughter wrote it together. Way too much "F" word and nasty sex stuff. Witchcraft and chants included. The author's voice comes through in the writing as she makes fun of real people under the premise of character development. (Example: To describe an annoying person she compares her to Sara Jessica Parker-hello?) The characters aren't endearing and you don't really care to read th

Marked is the first book in the House of Night series, written by mother/daughter team P.C. Cast and Kristin Cast. I picked up this series after it was recommended to me by Amazon.com, because I ordered the entire Twilight Saga series. I wanted to let a little bit of time (a couple months) pass after completing the last book in the Twilight Saga before starting to read this series, so I would have a fresh mind. I have to say that I really enjoyed this first book in the series. I'm very excited t

Fun new (to me) series! Zoey is leaving school one day when a vampyre tracker Marks her as a vampyre, too - with a blue crescent moon on her forehead. All "fledgling" vamps bear this mark, and are required to go to a special boarding school for instruction and vampire schooling. Zoey just wants to fit in and not draw too much attention to herself, but alas this is not to be. She takes on the uber-bitch Aphrodite, an older fledgling who is the leader of the Daughters and Sons of the Night, kind o

And yet another series sucks me in.
No pun intended.
I found this book as I was browsing in the borders YA section... and an associate stopped to ask if I was looking for a new series. Then she marched me right over to the House of Night books and grabbed the first one, Marked. She said "I'm reading this, and so is my daughter and my mother.. we LOVE them. They're like Twilight but with more action and less angst". SOLD.
I took it home and just plowed right through it.. and really enjoyed it. I'm l ...more

Woah. I picked this book up because it has been popular here at the library. This is the first book of a vampyre series and I have very little to recommend. Zoey is a regular girl who gets marked to become a fledgling vampire. She has to leave her school and family to move into the House of Night for her schooling and training. Unfortunately, Zoey is also a horrible person. I don't think that this was the author's intention but she rides the highest horse and I found it impossible to enjoy what

I'm starting to think any level of social conscience ruins 90% of all fiction.
