The books in this series aren't solid. I upgrade them to 4 star because they're strangely addictive. This book was no different. Whether it's the slowly-building friendships to romance of Simon and Meg, the development of other CS like Jean and Hope, the tenuous trust and friendship growing between the Lakeside Courtyard and their human "pack"--I like it all. I wish the female characters weren't primarily relegated to 'harmless' roles like humans and crows. I know, I know--Tess balances that out The books in this series aren't solid. I know, I know--Tess balances that out a bit. but still...sometimes I feel like the female humans are the comic relief. Where are the rest of the fierce female predators? Surely there's more than one female wolf (the bodywalker), maybe even some bears or other packs, in the area of the Courtyard? or is there a yet to be disclosed reason why so many of the female TI stick to the wild? however, I did like that last little bit of writing that humanized the evil Elayne a bit. Bravo for less cardboard characters.
This series, is, in general, a slow build. Occasionally the world that is built distracts me, with its similar but not quite naming and its indistinct geography. but the political ramifications are different from a lot of the fantasy I've read--more global in scope, maybe, or more realistic. Or maybe it's just wishful thinking that Earth had protectors like the TI to counterbalance the destruction of human greed.
Regardless of small quibbles, I continue to enjoy this series and look forward to where it might lead. Now that I'm a little less worried about Lizzy (who's really kinda a brat), I'm really curious about Hope's fate, and the new community Lakeside and the Intuits are building. And yes, the next book is already on hold for me at the library. Definitely the most of a series I've torn through in such a short period in a long long time.

((But giving the wolf a chocolate chip cookie?? OH NO. seriously. while wolves aren't dogs, chocolate kills dogs and is bad for most other animals. why would anyone feed an animal chocolate chip anything??? Ms Bishop needs to adjust what she's feeding the characters.)) ...more

I liked this better than the second book. The action and climax are not the author's strengths, but the book is still interesting, and there is more character development. It's interesting, too, for me that, I don't really care much about the protagonist anymore. It's like the story happens around her. But, I am interesting in many of the other characters, so that works for me. I still recommend this series. ...more

I love this series, and in the grand scheme of things, it was more enjoyable than many books. However, it was definitely not my favorite of the series. The character actions seemed a bit off and I missed the lightness found in some of the other books.
