This was a re-read for me, but I only have a vague memory of the plot from my first read, many years ago. I had a complex reaction. The plot is delightfully full of political intrigue and adventure, but on the other hand, this feels quite dated, full of the sort of casual sexism and bigotry that was common in SF at the time. I give up.

Extremely detailed culture with people who seem to really be products of said culture. Reading this, I couldn't help but think "oh, THIS is what they mean by 'a great work of imagination,'" because it is.
Having said that, I have to contradict myself a little. If the world is so well-developed and the people are so convincingly products of the world, then the people should be convincing and well-developed, too, right? Eh...*ahem*...you would think. yeah, so i've been stalled on this one for a long time. i've never been huge on sff, but i was branching out. i was really entertained in the beginning, but then i got to the crossing of the desert, and after about 50 pages of how rough it was to live in that suit that collected all the water, i kind of gave up. i wanted to skip ahead, but i'm not that kind of girl. ;) i don't know. i do want to finish it, because a lot of my friends have really enjoyed it and it came highly recommended - plus t
