I listened to this as my first book of 2010. I actually had to return it to the library about 20 minutes before the end, but I feel like I got enough of the book without the few stumbling minutes of wrapping up. This book was highly enjoyable, especially since it gave me something to talk about with some friends of mine who have actually hiked the appalachian trail. While I am pretty sure I never want to attempt a multi-week trek up the Appalachian Trail with a 50-pound pack on my back after reading this book, I thoroughly enjoyed reading it and have a better appreciation for this national landmark. An exceptional blend of research and humor made this a pleasure to read with plenty of laugh out loud moments. Bill Bryson is an engaging and erudite writer - a nice combination - and I always learn a lot from his books while enjoying the ride (or walk, in this case). I was shocked but not surprised by the very few steps taken by the average American in a week, marveled at the perils and beauty of the Appalachian Trail, including its amazing inception and continued maintenance, and laughed at the rather ludicrous lack of preparation that Bryson and his buddy Katz made for their walk in the woods. I'm not a big fan of travel books. I don't even really like non-fiction. Which makes it amazing to me that I read this book in a couple days last year. And would willingly pick it up again. Makes me want to plan a backpacking trip!

Great story. Deducted a star for the use of the R-word one time toward the end of the book. It wasn’t used toward a person, but I’m sure a better word could have been used.
