Read for the "Read a book that is set in the Middle East" category for the 2016 BookRiot Read Harder challenge (to be reviewed)
Since the other book I read for this category (Cleopatra: A Life) wasn't 100% set in the Middle East and was set so far in the past, I decided to add a second book for this category. Having seen and enjoyed the movie adaptation of The Complete Persepolis, I decided to try this graphic non-fiction memoir. It was a bit heavier than I was expecting. I haven't read many grap ...more

This is a quiet reflection on what and why we live. Nasser Ali Khan is a musician. It is all he has done, all he thinks he can do. When his tar is broken, he loses his way to connect to the world.
This was a real quiet meditation on death and dying, reflecting on life and relationships, mistakes and good days.
Satrapi’s art is bold and basic, and it works really well for this story.
This might be one of my favorites.

Nowhere near as complex or involving as Persepolis, Satrapi is bringing her own ideas and experiences to the page to try to understand why her uncle just decided to lay down and die one week. The way in which Persepolis triumphed was the intimate world in which we were allowed to explore, much like David B's 'Epileptic' but Chicken with Plums doesn't allow nearly the same experience, leaving us with the husk of a person.
