It's been less than a year since I read Clockwork Angel, so I was surprised at how difficult it was to get back into the series. The librarian asked me when I picked this up if it was about vampires, and I honestly couldn't remember! Well, yes, there are vampires, in case anyone asks you, but they're not very important in this book. there are also werewolves. but the most important being are the demons. There was quite an array of them in this book. creepy.

However, much of the book didn't even deal with the enemies. there was a lot of chasing after Mortmain, "the Magister", but probably just as much time spent with Tessa trying to decide between Jem and Will. I think it's a no brainer. Jem is a better person, no matter Will's reasons for his behavior. So I got a little impatient with her. I guess I forget what teenage hormones are like. Making out with them both within a day or two of each other did seem a little extreme, though, regardless of "warlock lemonade". The make out scene with Jem was hot. no denying that. But still...this started to feel like a retread of the Mortal Instruments love triangle. or of Twilight.
I did like how Sophie got a bigger role this time around. I like her, and think she's pretty sensible. I hope her new romance works out. I do wonder if she ends up being an ancestor of some of the characters in the Mortal Instruments.
I don't find Charlotte particularly likeable, regardless of how smart and strong she's supposed to be. and Henry just annoys me beyond belief. I am glad he manned up a little by the end, but he is still a waste of space to me.
I'm interested to see where this goes...I feel we've been teased quite enough with what Tessa really is, and I'm hoping for a resolution in the next book, whenever that is. I am guessing it has something to do with the family in York, and the young girl who died mysteriously and painfully. Asking for a love triangle resolution would probably be too much to ask for. I was glad for Nate and Jessamine's individual resolutions, though, and hope that's the last we see of them. Jessamine reminds me of the blonde character from Starcrossed, and it's not appealing. and finally I am very excited about Cecily. Bring it on! ...more

Good enough to keep me reading, but not as good as the first book - I found the love triangle tiresome. Jem is a problematic character for me - he's just too good to be interesting and illness isn't a satisfactory substitute for character complexity. ...more

I am so very in love with this series (these multiple interwoven past and present series). It's so very true, this books is basically sitting on the gold mine of an OT3 and you see it in every single which way as this volume unwinds.

I love the amount to which Tessa and Will read and quote and debate works of literature. How do you ever not love Charlotte, or her marriage, or all the growth therein shown in this one? I was sad for Jess this time, but also, not very surprised. I'm watching carefu ...more

I'm thoroughly enjoying this series. The love triangle is interesting, since both of the young men Tessa loves actually care for each other, too - that gives it a nice, heartbreaking dynamic. I really like the world Cassandra Clare has created, too. I'm bummed now that I have to wait for the next one! ...more
