That was the most un-put-downable book I've read in a long time. Hence the updating goodreads at 2 AM.

Re-read: dec 2011 - still awesome

This book grabbed me by the throat and demanded that I read it over two days. I dreamed about it during the night in between. I woke up in the middle of the next night still thinking about it. The story isn't new: a dystopian society where, to entertain the masses, children are pitted in a fight to the death reality show. But the details of the story still felt compelling -- the training details, the attention to costuming, the thoughts of a contestant who grew up watching the shows.

A futuristic novel. What’s left of North America is now Panem - a country divided with 12 Districts and a strong Capitol. Annually, the Capitol hosts ‘The Hunger Games’ - a fierce competition to the death between tributes from each district.

Katniss Everdeen grew up in District 12 - a coal-mining district that’s one of the poorest in Panem. When her twelve year old sister, Prim, is picked as a competitor - Katniss volunteers in Prim’s place.

If I can describe this book in one word, it would be wow

Instantly I cared about them all and was sucked into their stories. Even those who weren’t immediately likable grew on me. Haymitch, surprisingly e

I wanted to see what the hype was, too. Reading this gave me so much anxiety that I forced myself to read it in 2 days to get it over with and then had crazy nightmares. It's just so violent or maybe I'm too sensitive? It's almost like a mix between The Road and The Notebook. The writing is clear, and the ending is great, though. ...more

I have heard from several people that this is a great series - I can already tell it is one of those books I want to listen to (since I do audio book vs read) at all my spare moments - draws you in...lets see if it lives up to the hype...YES it really is a "page turner" and you can't wait to get to the ending yet at the same time never want it to end! Fast read and a good choice for a summer book! ...more

This is the most well crafted book I have read in a long time. The characters, setting and plot pacing are perfect. Gives you lots to think about but is not at all didactic. Released Oct. 2008
