A great book for both YA readers and non-readers. Loved the library, Mr Lemoncello and the puzzles. Wish they'd steered clear (or even -gasp- flipped) the stereotypes. The girls are a cheerleader who pretends she's dumb when she's really smart and another who is somewhat anti-social and reads constantly (Breakfast Club, anyone?) and the side-kick/best friend of the lead character (kudos to the author for having a female best friend). The hero is the cool dude who doesn't fit into any single grou

This was recommended to me by my nine-year-old, who is very much a library-lover -- and yes, he loved this library-themed book, too.
I've got mixed feelings on it. What I enjoyed: the fun puzzles, the references to other books (I wish there was a master list of all the books mentioned!), and the fact that kids and adults will both like this book enough to be able to talk about it together; it would probably be a decent read-aloud. An eccentric millionaire and game designer funds a small town's new library and brings every book lover's dream to life. The library is full of high tech gadgets, amazing special effects, and tons of mysterious secrets. When a group of middle schoolers win a competition to spend the night in the new library they must compete in a series of puzzles to find a way out. Reminiscent of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory this fun read has kept young bookworms buzzing since it was first released. Parent

I picked this book out of a Little Free Library a few blocks away and it's not that I regret it but...This is not one of those kid's books that you can read as an adult and enjoy as much as a kid does. It took me ages to finish because reading it was like wading through mud in cement shoes. It was clunky, the characters weren't well-drawn; it is neither Ellen Rankin nor Roald Dahl, no matter how hard it tries. I read the author interview at end and it seems he used to work for THE James Patterso
