I don't really like fantasy, but this is a classic, so I felt it was necessary to read it. It was good. The key characters are all endearing and interesting, and I did chuckle throughout at the adventures of Bilbo Baggins. The lesson of friendship and reconciliation over love of gold is also one of which all of us - children and adults alike - need continuous reminders. I started this back in September and read 3 chapters and then just stopped. Today I finally picked up and got sucked into it and read the rest of it in one day. Of course, this is not the first time I read the Hobbit. It is my favorite of Tolkien’s works and a great adventure. And I love all of the awesome bits that the annotated version has.

One of the books listed in "1001 Children's Books" ... and like many books listed in this book, I disagree with the age category, 8 is too young to sit through a long book like this! It would be better listed in the 12+ category.
