Height of fiction.

The blurbs on this book emphasize a romance, but I found the best part of this book to be Ifemelu - our hero - as she navigates her own many identities and those around her in her native Nigeria and as an “Americanah” over many years in the US. She is blunt and unafraid of meeting difficult topics head on - critical and admiring in equal measures, and always so articulate and beautiful in her language, since her words come from Adichie - master novelist.

People have complained that a lot of this book is an essay on race with characters thrown in. That's not an unfair assessment, but I thought the essay on race was quite interesting and I fell in love with these characters. I know very little about Nigerian immigrants. I haven't read many of their stories. This book captures the perspective of a person moving to the United States from Nigeria and experiencing the US from that outsider's perspective. Overall I liked the book and found it thought-provoking, although I didn't alway feel like the characters would've been open to having a discussion about the thoughts they were provoking. *I had to read this over the course of a few months as I made it 50% through before it was sent back to the virtual Overdrive library.
This story exposed a life different from my own. It is important to see yourself in the pages of a book or on a screen, but also to experience life through someone else's eyes and experiences. Reading with an open mind can take you outside of your own experience no matter if that story is told from the point of view of someone of another race, gender, etc.

This novel is about immigration, racism and returning home but ultimately it is a story of first love, which I appreciated. There is a lot going on in this novel, but I liked reading about Nigeria and especially liked the scenes in the braiding salon. I think the plot was a little too meandering for me to really love this book, but it was interesting.
