*changed my mind, upgraded from a 3 to a 4, realizing how much it stayed with me a week after reading.

If there were pluses & minuses in Goodreads I'd likely give it a 4 minus rather than a 3. I mostly loved the first half, despite it breaking my literary bias against books with such modern details that they don't carry you away to a timeless place -- for this book, that was actually necessary, because the issues she's capturing really are specifically rooted in our current place and time.

What happens when you don't marry the true love of your youth? What happens when you move on with your life, and your thoughts return to this person, even when you no longer see or talk to them?

I doubt I can add anything to this review that hasn't been said by better reviewers than me, but this is an example of right book at the wrong time. This is one of those books I waited a really long time to read and then ended up finally picking up at exactly the right time. If you are one of the few people who have not read this yet, this is the time. The conversations around race are so pertinent to this moment, plus it’s ...more

A truly incredible book about Africa, America, race, relationships, and what happens when we leave home and go back. I loved the style of the book, the inclusion of the main character's blog posts, they way she articulated her feelings on being African in America and being Americanah in Africa. I often had a hard time distinguishing the time frame between chapters, but its a small issue compared to the fantasticness of the entire novel. ...more

I was very very surprised to love this book as much as I did. I found Ifemelu to be a reliably frustrating character, but I still admired her. The least successful part of this book is the love story. Everything else is gorgeous.
