I wasn't real sure about The Good Earth at the beginning. The language is kind of slow (for lack of a better word) although the story moves a long at a good enough pace. But as the story moved a long, the language bothered me less (except in the middle she started almost every bit of dialogue with "And" in the first word or two--that got on my nerves).

I read this (or maybe was just expected to read it and listened to class discussions about it?) back in ninth grade English -- but revisiting it as an adult was a good experience. The Good Earth follows the life of the fictional farmer, Wang Lung, and his search for happiness and prosperity. I found it interesting to consider how as his prosperity grew, his happiness didn't -- in fact, it was the prosperity he yearned for that brought about a lot of his problems.
