For me this book was just ok. I didn't have the emotional reaction that many others had to this story. I found most of the characters unlikeable. Even the characters that seemed like "good people" were too spineless and too martyr-like for me to care about them at all. Had I been able to connect with these characters I think the book would have made more of an impression. As it was, it was a fast and mostly engaging read, but one that I'll likely forget completely in a month or two. ...more

On the plus side: I really enjoyed the setting of this book -- an island off the coast of rural Australia during the 1920s -- and I really enjoyed the writing, too (though I guess I never could quite figure out the point of shifting verb tenses ... oh well). Some of the moments in the book were simply beautiful -- I just adored the falling-in-love scenes between Tom and Isabel. I also liked the plot; the storyline kept me turning the pages. There were a few characters that frustrated me a little ...more

I've tried watching this movie twice - and never finished. Each time, at very specific parts in the movie, I had to stop. I kept thinking, "Are you kidding me!?!?" Now, a year on, I have decided to read the book. It keeps popping up everywhere with amazing reviews. Seemed more like a book type of entertainment, than a movie.

Well, after reading it, I had the same freaking thoughts through the whole thing!!! I definitely liked the book, but I also didn't like it. Ugh. I just don't know how I feel

Beautifully written but heartbreaking. And honestly, the more I think about the book, the more upset I get. And how did Frank, the man in the boat, end up dead? A heart attack or did the boat tip over but the baby was fine? I do not recommend reading this while pregnant--I think I need to go read Dad is Fat now!

A very heartbreaking story! Well written and great narration. It was neat to read about some of the nuances involved with running a lighthouse! As a mother it was really hard to read though, but definitely a book I could not put down as I had to know how it ended!

Loved the glimpse at a what the life of a light keeper on the other side of the world might have been like.

Admittedly, I only read this because my beloved Michael Fassbender is starring in the movie version, due out some time next year. It's seriously depressing. I may wait for the movie to hit On Demand or something before I see it. ...more
