I love Jeremy Irons, and while this book is perverted and erotic and like nothing I've ever quite read before, this book is really written well and in Irons' unmistakable and strong voice, these words flow smoothly as syrup. Humbert is like no other character that I've ever come across in literature. He is messed up, to be sure, but I feel like he met his match in Delores. Ok... so...
I don't know what to think about this. There's humor, there's poetry, there's too much French, and then there's the PDFilia. That part of the book is so disgusting. So it's so confusing, because the writing is amazing. There's beauty in the story, and there shouldn't be in a story like this.
And someone has been lying to me. I thought he abandoned her and she died at childbirth at 12 or something like that. And that was not what happened. Basically, she abandoned him and didn't die of ...more

While I can't call this a favorite, I can definitely see what all the commotion is about. very disturbing, yet full of humor and beautifully written. The contrast is mesmerizing. That such a despicable crime/person can be so artfully and unflinchingly depicted transcends voyeurism and disgust to something more meaningful. compassion is not the key here, tragedy is. ...more
