Very disappointing read.

This is a very hard book to evaluate. The first time I read it, many years ago, I couldn't get beyond the subject matter. I read it again more recently, and was so impressed by the writing. I had the incredible annotated version (which is the model to which all annotated versions should aspire, in my opinion}, so I became aware of Nabokov's influences, references, etc. Still, the subject matter is abhorrent. I don't think I would have read it if not for book group, but I'm very glad that I did.

Well written? Yes. Interesting? Not really. I was drawn in early with beautiful descriptions, and intriguing self exploration, but quickly bored with the repetitiveness and boorishness of the story and main character. Lolita is the standard teenager, moody, irritable, and certainly not worth the complete devotion of HH. I guess in the end, I am glad that I read this book, as it is considered a classic, but wouldn’t read it again or even really recommend it to most readers.
