what i learned from this book: i am totally addicted to teenage vampire books.
in this world, vampires do have to avoid the sun. they also need blood - there are no "vegetarian" vampires here!
the best thing about these vampires, i think, is that Richelle Mead doesn't shy away from the fact that all the old tales of vampires have an element of addiction and erotica to them. in her world, there are "feeders" - humans who have basically given up their lives for free vampire bites. Okay FINE. I have resisted every single recommendation of Richelle Mead that I've ever seen, because it just looks like so much teeny bopper fantasizing fluff. I tend to HATE books that involve the word "dhampire." It's just ... so much nauseating Mary Suing (oh I'd love to be a sexy vampire, but not with all the downsides - I know! dhampire!") But I keep seeing it listed. And yes I like vampires. And I like fluff, too. So that's it, I'm done resisti ...more

I enjoyed this a lot more than I expected to! The action starts right from the beginning, as Rose and Lissa are captured and brought back to St. Vladimir’s, the school they’ve run away from. The vampire myth here has been twisted around, with there being more than one “flavor”; the Strigoi are probably closest to the traditional vampire. I liked the changes and the extra hierarchy it brought to the vampire society. This is a YA book, so there are a lot of teen-related issues — bullies, gossip, d

Mead has an interesting take on vampires, developing them from a one-type-fits-all demon to a more diverse race with their own social hierarchy. Similar to Harris and, unfortunately, other well-known vampire series though, BUT, the real saving grace of this series is Rose, our prickly protagonist who despite her faults, is actually quite the entertaining lead. She's actually more like a Buffy type character than any other protagonist, definitely not a Mary Sue. I'd recommend this before Harris a

This was a cute and enjoyable read. It wasn't particularly memorable, but I read it in mostly one sitting so clearly I wasn't bored.

Slow start but overall an entertaining and easy read. I'll be checking out the next book in the series.

It was an entertaining read. It is hard to like the main character, Rose. Tough, self-absorbed and shallow, she complements Lissa, who is more of a loner at heart, feels all emotions deeply, and is a gentle soul. As the story progresses, Rose's character slowly shifts and begins to mature. As the series continues, I think that we will likely see her continue to develop maturity and shed some of her self-involvement. I'm looking forward to the rest of the series!
