I'm actually quite surprised by how much I enjoyed this book. I thought a book where half of the story was told via emails between 2 friends and where the MCs didn't even physically see each other until around 60% nor did they even speak to each other for the first time until around 94% would be a total bore. I've read a half dozen of Rainbow Rowell's books, and I think this might be my favorite so far. Here's why: [Warning: spoiler alert for many Rainbow Rowell books, not just this one!]

1) Although I read and enjoyed the Simon Snow series, it was fantasy, and mostly focusing on a homosexual relationship between two men. I live in the real world, and I am neither homosexual nor a man. On the other hand, Beth (and Jennifer) are very much women like me and heterosexual - as far as we know - and they work in an office in the real world. This is immediately more relatable to me, a heterosexual woman who lives in the real world and has worked in an office.

2) Fangirl and Eleanor & Park are wonderful in their capturing of young love / new love, but I am no longer a young adult or new adult or whatever. Plus, Eleanor & Park had a sad ending.

3) Like Fangirl, this book switches between "real life" narration and an alternate text. If you've read any of my other reviews of books with multiple types of texts in the storytelling process, you know that I am a big fan of these types of stories. Throw in some text messages or emails or something - I'm in.

4) This was suuuuuch a slow burn, with so many mixed messages and missed opportunities. I don't normally like such a long drawn-out plot, but this novel was done well, with plenty of humor, which made the pill a little easier to swallow, I think.

5) Both Beth and Lincoln had things going on in their lives that they had to deal with before the time was right for their relationship to get a chance. I know, this is a sappy cliche, but I really do believe that there is no "the one" for anyone. I think there is a person who is best suited for us at certain times of our lives, if we're ready for them. If we're not ready for them when the opportunity arises, that's okay - there will be someone else we're right for as we grow and develop... or that same person will come around when we're more prepared. Consequently, it made sense to me that Beth had to deal with some family/ex/friend stuff, and Lincoln had to deal with several family things, not to mention his work issues, before they were "right" for each other. That is the true HEA - making our self improvement because we need to, and then being rewarded with a person who will appreciate who we are now.

Not quite sure how I feel about this one. Throughout the bulk of the story Lincoln seemed kinda pathetic. I am all for odd and geeky people, but he just seemed like he had no motivation, and I can't stand people like that.

There kept being mention of how Jennifer and Beth were "nice and smart and funny." I didn't think they were funny. I didn't laugh in any of their email exchanges. Not once. Jennifer didn't seem to want a baby, but she sort of did. If she didn't want a baby, why didn't she talk ...more

This is a "goodreads reading goal duplicate" sort of review, but I really love the cover on this edition. It makes me want to collect all my Rainbow Rowell favorites physically as well as in kindle form. I have to really love a book to pay for it twice (or in the case of Harry Potter, at least 3 times... no 4.... 5?) ...more

I loved "Elenor & Park" (which was also written by this author) so much that I didn't want to read any of her other books in case they weren't good enough. Well... this one is good enough. So good.

It was on sale for $2 so I picked it up. It was her first novel, and so well written. I'm giving it 4 stars vs 5 because the beginning dragged a bit (though still interesting). I'll definitely read more of her books now.
