I've read this several times, most recently, I think, to my son when he was about 4 years old (really!) I don't really know what The Great American Novel is, but I think if someone from another country or universe were to read only one American novel, this would be it. I read this back in sophomore English -- or maybe I just read the first half of it, because I could not at all remember much of anything after Huck and Jim "ran by Cairo." I remember struggling with this book the first time around, and at first, this go-around was not much better. My problem was that I was reading in short spurts between tending the kids. Huck's dialect is, in my unprofessional opinion, pretty authentic, and while I thought his "voice" added much to the flavor of the story, it d
