This book was a unique read for me; told by a dog and the other main character a semi-professional race car driver, not your average 9 to 5 job.
I loved The Art of Racing in the Rain immediately, and I couldn’t stop reading, even though from the outset it’s clear it’s going to be a rather sad story.
But then at about the Chapter 30 mark I feared it took a wrong turn, to me, it seemed to be heading towards the realm of Jodi Picoult (although to be fair I have only read one of her books), and sudden ...more

Title: The art of racing in the rain
Description: Narrated by the family dog, this novel is the story of a family that hits a rough spot; the wife and mother dies of a brain tumor and the father is then hit with a child custody suit by his wife’s parents.
Plot: This was the most depressing book I’ve read in a long while. The first sentence tells us that it’s the end of the dog’s life, so we know we’ll be witnessing the passing of a beloved pet. Add to that all the crushing blow ...more

When this book was picked as our monthly book club selection there were quite a few people who said "Ugh, not a dog book!". I will admit I have been waffling over the past year as to whether to read The Art of Racing in the Rain or not. On the one hand I had heard good things about the book but on the other hand I am generally not a fan of sappy animal books.

This was a cute if a little trite in that it was written from the dog's point of view. That said, it could have been a lot worse and if you're going to write from an animal's point of view, this was the way to do it.

To me, this was one of my all time favorite reads. I loved the dog's point of view and have always felt that my dog knows a lot more than we think and I found myself talking to him differently as I read the book. Sweet, funny, and heartbreaking, this book hits them all. Definitely recommend to anyone who's an animal lover. Christopher Evan Welch did a fantastic job reading too!
