This is my first read of this book -- I somehow missed it in the teenage years when I am pretty sure everyone else in the world was assigned it for school. The story is simple -- teenagers are classified as "greasers" or "socs" and struggle with what that means, their places in the world, and how to grow up. But the writing is just so clean and clear and the characters so vivid. I'm impressed with what SE Hinton could do in such a short book, and at the age of 16. If you haven't read this, or ha ...more

I can see why middle school uses this as required reading. still relevant today. good message, good text to teach allegory, dialogue, symbolism, character archetypes....my teacher brain was on the whole time.
