I really did not enjoy this book. As in... finishing it was pure torture. I pressed on and finished it for my one of the tasks (read a book written more than 100 years ago) on my 2015 reading challenge. I started it the week before Halloween thinking a little 200 page creepy book would be a quick read for the holiday. I finished it today - Christmas day - 2 months later. I really enjoyed this book. I admit, that picking up the book, the ONLY thing I knew of this story was about the creation of the monster. That's it, so I had NO idea what to expect, nor how the story played out (or even, the REASON for the creation of this monster). The story read pretty easily once I got used to the style of writing and I ended up reading this in about 4 sittings.

How many times can an author use the word 'wretch'? It still remains a wonderful meditation on the human spirit, the strive of amibition and what it means to be a monster.
