I can't believe I waited this long to read Kindred, much less Octavia Butler! I stayed up for two nights, reading Kindred, and the first time I did it, I was only about 25% through. Butler has built engaging characters, an immersive narrative, and a fantasy novel that makes it easy to suspend disbelief about the time travel aspects. This book completely sucked me in from the first page. The plot seems far-fetched: In 1976, Dana randomly wakes up in 1815 on her ancestor’s plantation. She eventually returns to her home but gets called back several more times. I loved that it was less a time travel story and more a narrative of life on a plantation. There are some difficult scenes of slave treatment, but it is thought-provoking, powerful, and creative. I will be thinking about this one for a long time.

Author Octavia Butler described this sci-fi/historical fiction novel as a "grim fantasy," and consequently I'm having a hard time with the rating. The plot was gripping, the characters real and complex -- but at the same time, the story and setting were disturbingly intense and, consequently, not particularly enjoyable to read. And yet I suppose that I should be disturbed by slavery! This is one of those books that will stick with me for a long time.
