I was initially intrigued by this book and bought the remaining two in the trilogy. I didn't bother reading the third one. The device of each person having a daimon was the best part. I began to find the books confusing and too dark. I much preferred Pullman's Victorian photographer books (The Ruby in the Smoke, The Shadow in the North, The Tiger in the Well, and The Tin Princess).
