This well-known fantasy series by Phillip Pullman starts with the book The Golden Compass. In this book Lyra and her daemon, Pantalaimon eavesdrops on a secret meeting with her uncle and various scholars from the university that she calls home. Lyra learns about the controversy surrounding dust and the experiments being carried out in the north. Great series. Pretty dark for kids.

I was initially intrigued by this book and bought the remaining two in the trilogy. I didn't bother reading the third one. The device of each person having a daimon was the best part. I began to find the books confusing and too dark. I much preferred Pullman's Victorian photographer books (The Ruby in the Smoke, The Shadow in the North, The Tiger in the Well, and The Tin Princess). ...more

I want a daemon. I want to see the Northern Lights. I want my breath to catch in my throat as I run alongside Lyra across the rooftops and across the wastelands.

This is a deeply fantastical magical book. It's very clever and packed with action and suspense. The solid start of a very imaginative world.

I liked this book. I only had one issue with it....the ending. Pullman took effort in every other aspect of this book except the very last few pages....it felt rushed and under developed (if that is possible after 345 pages to have the last 6 rushed but it was). But all and all a good book
