This book is haunting. I had a hard time with the subject matter in places and thought at times it would have been better suited as a short story. However, I really liked the character development and unique format of the novel. In the very beginning of the book we learn all about the crime: who, what, when, where and why. But you as the reader are the other one besides the victim who has answers. There were points where I actually wanted to yell at the other characters who the killer was, like

I think Oprah featured this book on her show, and when I saw a copy in the bargain bin at a rummage sale, the description from the jacket made it sound like something I'd enjoy reading.
Should have left it in the bargain bin, I was not impressed one bit by this book. This is one case where the movie had better be an improvement on the book, or else the movie will be awful.

I just cannot fathom why so many people hated this book. I thought it was beautiful and thought-provoking.
