I think Oprah featured this book on her show, and when I saw a copy in the bargain bin at a rummage sale, the description from the jacket made it sound like something I'd enjoy reading.
Should have left it in the bargain bin, I was not impressed one bit by this book. This is one case where the movie had better be an improvement on the book, or else the movie will be awful.

It isn't often a novel starts off on such a sad depressing note- death then follows with the downfall of marriages, the day to day life of a serial killer not to mention the ghostly presence of a murder victim watching it all. I found that I was forcing myself to keep reading, knowing that there was some sort of surprise ending coming. I didn't enjoy it when the ending was revealed--more creeped out. This book is a wonderful tale of family and human frailty, heart-breaking and life-affirming all at the same time. I really enjoyed the depiction of heaven(s), as realistic as a fantasy can be and as far as possible from saccharine angels on clouds with harps.

Oh my goodness, what an amazing book! So heartbreaking in so many ways, but I'm so glad I read this book--even if I'm checking on my children a little more often and hugging them a little tighter.

I was pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed this book. It was much different than I expected, but now I'm looking forward to seeing the movie.
