What Members Thought

A lot of kids want to run away and have an adventure on their own. I know I did. In this book, Claudia and her brother Jamie actually do. Living in an art museum, albeit temporarily, sounds to me like the chance of a lifetime. However, there are lessons to be learned along the way. This very old, very dated children's book is indeed a classic. I'm happy and appreciative that I recognize how timeless it is.

Five stars mostly for nostalgia's sake -- I read this several times in childhood and was excited that my kids were finally old enough to be introduced to it. Even though it's been twenty years since I'd read this one, I remembered almost all of it. This is a rare book that's big on both plot (who doesn't love the idea of running away to a museum?) and character development (admittedly Claudia's journey makes a little more sense to me as an adult than it did as a child). This month’s read aloud with my kids. Honestly, it was overhyped to me. I felt the dialogue was clunky and annoying (the kids bicker and correct each other the whole book) and thought Mrs Frankweiler would play a more important role. I guess I was expecting more emotion and big adventures. My kids liked it, though, and it was a quick read.

I listened to this book on audiobook, and maybe that's why I didn't connect as well as I expected. It's a good story, and I didn't mind how dated it is, and I like the kids and Mrs. F. But... I don't need to listen to or read it again. I know this is sacrilegious, but I'm being honest.
